What is the “honeymoon” period and why does it happen?

Honeymooning is the term used by your care team to reflect the relative stability your extremely premature baby may demonstrate in the first several hours after birth. This reflects the support being given by the mother up until the moment of birth, support that slowly disappears. As maternal support decreases, and the preterm baby’s organs must function increasingly, the immaturity becomes apparent and “the honeymoon is over.”
